Finite element simulation of dispersion in the Bay of Santander

Two mathematical models are used to simulate pollution in the Bay of Santander. The first is the hydrodynamic model that provides the velocity field and height of the water. The second gives the pollutant concentration field as a resultant. Both models are formulated in two-dimensional equations. Linear triangular finite elements are used in the Galerkin procedure for spatial discretization. A finite difference scheme is used for the time integration. At each time step the calculated results of the first model are input to the second model as field data. The efficiency and accuracy of the models are tested by their application to a simple illustrative example. Finally a case study in simulation of pollution evolution in the Bay of Santander is presente

    Get PDF

    Get PDF

Molecular Determinants for the Activation/Inhibition of Bak Protein by BH3 Peptides

Apoptosis is a key procedure for all cells. Understanding this process and its regulation has been a subject of study in the last decades. Bcl-2 family of proteins are involved in the regulation of the apoptosis through the formation of homodimers or heterodimers between anti-apoptotic and pro-apoptotic proteins. Deregulation of pro-apoptotic proteins contributes to the progression of many tumour processes. Understanding how these proteins are activated is key to find new anti-cancer treatments. As no drug capable of activating Bak has been discovered yet, studying the structural and energetic insights of the binding of the known Bak activators, BH3 peptides, is essential to design new small molecules that resemble their binding to Bak. Recently, a BH3 Bim analogue has been discovered which inactivates Bak instead of activating it. Therefore, the present work is aimed to identify how BH3 peptides activate or inactivate Bak and determine any difference between them. Determination of the structural differences between the complexes with the activator and the inhibitor has been carried out by means of the study of the fluctuations of the corresponding Principal Components. Moreover, to calculate the binding free energy of the different complexes and to determine which residues of the peptide have the largest contribution to complex formation, MMPB/GBSA approaches are used. Results obtained in this work show differences in complexes with the activator and the inhibitor in structural and energetic terms, which can be used in the design of new molecules that could activate or inactivate pro-apoptotic Bak

Helminth communities of the exotic introduced turtle, Trachemys scripta elegans in southwestern Spain: Transmission from native turtles

    Get PDF
We report the prevalence and diversity of helminth parasites found in native turtles Mauremys leprosa and Emys orbicularis from three localities in southwestern Spain and we describe the helminth communities of exotic turtles Trachemys scripta elegans coexisting in the wild with both native turtle species. Five nematodes species were identified, of which Serpinema microcephalus was the only species common between two localities, although infection parameters were different between them. This is the first report of cross transmission of S. microcephalus and Falcaustra donanaensis from native to exotic turtles and the first report of genus Physaloptera in turtles of the Palearctic Region. Continuous releasing of exotic pet turtles in wildlife ecosystems increases the risk of parasite introductions and, consequently, potential transmission to native species, and highlights the impending need for regulation of pet turtle trade in Europe

A CTMC-based characterisation of the propagation of errors in GMPLS Optical Rings

    Get PDF
Abstract: This article presents a Continuous-Time Markov Chain model to characterise the propagation of failures in optical GMPLS rings. In order to characterize the behaviour of failure propagation epidemic-based models are commonly used. However, the existing epidemic models do not take into account the specific features of a multilayer network environment. A node failure in GMPLS-based networks can affect: Control Plane and Data plane reporting different failures scenarios. Consequently, an extended generic epidemic model called SID is proposed, in order to cover multiple failures and recovered states in a GMPLS Multilayer scenario. The CTMC model takes into account the SID model and provides a set of design rules to specify the values of repair rates required to achieve a given service availability, assuming a certain infection and disable rate. The work described in this paper was carried out with the support of the BONE project (''Building the Future Optical Network in Europe''), a Network of Excellence funded by the European Commission through the 7th ICT-Framework Programme. Get PDF
AbstractComposition and structure of the Hondo River ichthyofauna and its spatial variation were determined as a function of environmental parameters. Six sites along the river were sampled in March, April and May 2012. Data for estimating structure of fish assemblages was obtained by means of a 58.5cm harpoon during 2 hours of free diving at each sampling site. The species list for the study area was completed with the aid of gillnets, longlines, double-cone traps, and hook-and-line. In addition, a bibliographical research performed as well as the ichthyological collection of ECOSUR at Chetumal was checked. The systematic list includes 40 species in 33 genera, 18 families and 11 orders. The richest family was Cichlidae, including the exotic Oreochromis niloticus. The environmental parameters that best described distribution and abundance of fish in the Hondo River were river width, distance to mouth, transparency, depth, dissolved oxygen concentration, and conductivity. Correlation between species and environmental parameters was high in both axis (0.89 and 0.79). The river was classified into 3 environmental zones, although its fish fauna could be divided in 2 main assemblages
